| What is ammolite? Ammolite is approximately 70 million years old. It is the fossilized remains of a squid-like creature. It was granted official gemstone status in 1981 by CIBJO International Commission of Colored Gemstones. The luminous qualities of ammolite rival black opals for fire and color. The ammolite used in our jewelry is a "triplet." The ammolite is on a black onyx base, it is coated with a spinel top. The spinel protects the ammolite gem from the elements while not distracting from its beauty. Spinel has a hardness of 8.5 (for comparision diamond has a hardness of 10). The spinel adds a smooth appearance to this fozzilized gem. Ammolite (without spinel) has a hardness of 4.5. Opal, in comparison, has a hardness of 6. |
