Masonic Ring

Masonic Ring

It is not known, for certain, how or when the Masonic Fraternity began. One theory commonly accepted is that the Masonic Fraternity arose from the stonemasons guilds during the Middle Ages. Many of the symbols and the language still in use by the fraternity's rituals come from this era. The Regius Poem (printed circa 1390) is the oldest document that makes reference to Masons. This document is a copy of an earlier work. In 1717, four lodges in London formed the first Grand Lodge of England, and records from that point on are more complete. Within three decades, the fraternity had spread throughout Europe and into the American Colonies. In colonial America, freemasonry became very popular. Our first president, George Washington was a Mason. Scholar and inventor, Benjamin Franklin served as the head of the fraternity in Pennsylvania. Other famous masons include Paul Revere, Joseph Warren, John Hancock, John Sullivan, Lafayette, Baron Fredrick von Stuben, Nathanael Greene, and John Paul Jones. Another Mason, Chief Justice John Marshall, shaped the Supreme Court into its present form. Within three decades, the fraternity had spread throughout Europe and into the American Colonies. Today there are over four million Masons worldwide continuing to commit acts of goodwill and help men, women and children of all ages.
