| What are puffins? Puffins belong to the Alcidae (Auk) family of seabirds. There are 4 species of puffins. Puffins are usually 10 inches tall and live to be up to twenty years of age. Puffins are a favorite among many "birders." They are so appealing because of their multi-colored bills that have given them nicknames like "sea parrot" and "clowns of the sea". Puffins have always been liked by people but for a long time it was for food, fashion and trade -- not just bird watching. When pioneers came to the North Atlantic coast in the 1600's, they began hunting seabirds as necessity for food. As more settlers came to New England, puffins along with many other birds were killed for their feathers. These feathers were used often as decorations in hats! Puffins are still a common food item in Iceland and the Faeroe Islands. |
